Daphne Gulland `s Books

The Penguin Dictionary of English Idioms

I would like to thank everyone who has bought my Penguin Dictionary of English Idioms. It has been selling very well for more than 30 years! My sincere thanks go to all of you who have written very friendly reviews, praising my dictionary, on Amazon.co.uk. In this month of October, 2024, it has 415 ratings on Amazon.

I wrote the first edition of this book together with my father, David Hinds-Howell (1916 – 1995). It brought us many hours of joy, excitement at finding new idioms, and deep satisfaction when Penguin accepted it.

Please note that the book shown here is the second edition, printed in 2002 with an amended index. I am glad to say that Penguin has corrected all the numerical mistakes in the 2001 index of this Dictionary of English Idioms. The index was not my responsibility. Penguin deeply regrets this mishap. Therefore, when you buy the second edition, please check that it says "with amended index" on the page before the Preface.

All the second editions of The Penguin Dictionary of English Idioms have 5,000 idioms. There is a printing error on the back cover of this 2002 blue, white and black edition where it says there are 4,000 idioms. This has been corrected but it might not have been reprinted yet. It has 5,000 idioms.

The first edition had 4,000 idioms.

The English language is full of pitfalls – bizarre spelling, illogical rules of grammar – but the most common problem lies in understanding and using the vast array of idioms.

Power nap, girl power, sticking one’s neck out, to jump the queue – these are just some of the thousands of idioms that have become an integral part of the English language. The Penguin Dictionary of English Idioms looks at a vast range of examples, providing concise definitions and explaining how they should be used. This practical guide is arranged by theme, making it possible to compare all the idioms in that subject area and find the right one for the occasion, whether in writing or in speech.

  •  Gives clear explanations of some 5,000 phrases
  •    Groups entries by theme, including colours (a white lie), elements (air-kissing), clothes (verbal handbagging) or war and peace (eco-warrior)
  • Offers clear examples of usage in everyday speech
  • Provides information about the origin of such expressions as Cloud-Cuckoo-Land, as nutty as a fruitcake and Achilles’ heel

This dictionary has been included in the Penguin Complete Reference Collection (8 books)

You may buy this dictionary from Blackwells, Bookshop.org. Foyles, Hive, Waterstones, WHSmith, Amazon worldwide or any other shop, either under the name of Daphne Gulland or Daphne M. Gulland
